Spider-Man Episode 26- “The Fake Hero in a Treachorous Predicament”
Aired November 8, 1978
The Iron Cross Army tries out the same plan from episode 2, to create an impostor Spider-Man while ruining the real one’s good name. Will the real Spidey please stand up and help the poor sap that’s pretending to be him?
A senior high school student is sick of life after recent events, including a clash with a thug with a metallic hand, and is down in the dumps. His beautiful girlfriend tries to cheer him up, and he just won’t budge from his melancholy. He gives the usual teen angst spiel of wanting to be stronger so that he can prove his worth as a man.
That night while wallowing in bed, Junichi Miyaguchi gets a mysterious call from none other than… Amazoness! She tells him to go to the Central Building in Shinjuku at 1:00AM if he wants to see a miracle. After the call ends, he wallows some more in bed and then heads to the building. When he arrives, a bunch of men are lying prostrate on the ground, apparently knocked out or dead. The cops suddenly arrive and determine that the victims are all members of the Iron Cross Army. They accost Jun demanding answers, and the press that arrive on the scene suddenly make the assumption that the kid is Spider-Man! After some random guy shouts that the boy is Spider-Man, the whole scene becomes a flash of lightbulbs and police pushing people out of the way.
Back at the Iron Cross HQ, Amazoness explains her plan as the real Spider-Man will have to go after his fake, now declared a national hero. It’s just a simple entrapment scheme.
The next day, Hitomi rushes in the Yamashiro household with news that they’ve revealed the identity of Tokyo’s friendly wall-crawler. Takuya comes downstairs and wonders about Junichi Miyaguchi the impostor. He immediately suspects an Iron Cross plot. After his girlfriend drags him away from a nice breakfast, they ride into town and find Junichi being harassed by reporter during his part time job at a ramen shop. While Hitomi tries to get a picture, Junichi runs away only to be driven away in a getaway car provided by Amazoness. Takuya pursues the car, abandoning his girlfriend for the umpteenth time.
At some fancy hotel, Amazoness acting very restrained or on Valium, tells Junichi that starting from today, he will be Spider-Man, taking credit for all of the real one’s hard work. She starts becoming more and more menacing as she explains what will become of Jun, as Spider-Man will keep fighting crime and HE will live in this hotel and drive a fancy sports car. The real Spidey bursts onto the scene and starts beating everybody up, except for Amazoness who conveniently runs away. He chases a few thugs down the hotel’s spiral staircase and punches and strings them from the grates.
Junichi somehow manages to walk down to the ground floor and is stunned by the strength of the masked hero. Spider-Man meets up with him and tells him to run as the police arrive. As he turns a corner, Amazoness has him retaken to the hotel room and now gives him an ultimatum. If Junichi refuses to participate in this charade, the Iron Cross Army will kill everybody in his hometown.
As news of Spider-Man’s fame reaches near and far, the exact nature of Amazoness’s plan is revealed. By making sure that Junichi IS Spider-Man, the Iron Cross Army will commit murders and other felonies, tying it all to the kid. Because it is assumed that he is the wall-crawling superhero, the real one’s reputation will be dragged through the mud. Professor Monster laughs manically at this plan. Why couldn’t they think of this back in episode 2?! In addition, if Spider-Man tries to retaliate, the Machine Bem Volcano Beast will be ready for him. Mwa ha ha.
Later, Junichi’s girlfriend Yoko comes to visit him at his hotel room. She obviously doesn’t believe him and he tells her to scram and forget everything about him. An Iron Cross thug hides behind a curtain, waiting for the opportune moment to kill the girl. When Yoko reaches downstairs, Amazoness tries to kidnap the girl, only to be thwarted by Spider-Man.
Junichi tries to sneak out of his hotel room and heads to some fancy club for some reason. Of all the places to hide in Tokyo, he had to pick one where the odds of getting drugged are very high. It happens when some doll gives him a glass of papaya juice. Pretty soon a plan is set into motion where Amazoness’s reckless driving kills some innocent woman with the sports car and Junichi, drunk, is placed into the driver’s seat. That way, the boy is tied up in a hit and run, and Spider-Man will somehow be dubbed a murderer or something.
Takuya hears the news and heads out to save Junichi. Currently, the boy is in police custody and is taken around to be identified by eyewitnesses. The ones being questioned are indeed the ones who drugged him, who lie to the police’s face that he was here drinking all night. Junichi tries to plead his innocence, but the evidence against him is overwhelming. Spider-Man watches from the ceiling, and also sees Amazoness starting the next phase of the plan.
The police escort van is suddenly attacked and taken by the Iron Cross Army. The cops are pushed out on to the streets, and the thugs now have Junichi in custody. They drive to a racetrack of some sort in an attempt to lure Spider-Man out. When Amazoness checks the van, it’s none other than Spider-Man playing a practical joke. He sneaked in when the van pulled to a stop at an intersection, bursting through the undercarriage and having Junichi escape in his place.
The man who smashes apart the machinations of evil is ready to fight the Iron Cross Army in the episode’s requite battle. Running through stadium, he beats up Ninders left and right, while displaying the production company’s superb wirework. Amazoness tries to get away, and when our hero tries to pursue, mines are placed on the ground. It is further complicated by the arrival of the Volcano Beast, which looks more like Gumby a la Eddie Murphy than say a Volcarona or a Heatran. It gets killed with a Sword Vigor to the chest.
After today’s events, the police has decided to free Junichi and removed all charges placed against him. The boy and his girlfriend renew their commitment to schoolwork and yadda yadda while Spidey watches on.
