Spider-Man Episode 25: “The Treasure, the Dog, and the Body Double”
Aired November 1, 1978
The Iron Cross Army sets its eye on a rare crystal, the Star of Egypt, and they go after a boy and his grandfather to get it. Can Spider-Man save the boy from a fate worse than his grandfather, or will his enemies succeed in getting what they want once again?
One dark and stormy night, somebody breaks into a museum and heads for the Ancient Egyptian Artifacts Exhibit. He reaches the Star of Egypt, a yellow crystal mound large enough to wear on your head.
The scene shifts to the Nakayama household, where the owner is apparently a taxi driver. Inside, a boy prepares for the school day, packing his books as neatly as he can. It’s a typical boy’s room, adorned with many motorcycle pictures, and curiously one of Takuya’s rare victory pics, wearing a wreath while holding his trophy. The boy heads outside to greet his dog a good morning, while his grandpa prays at the altar of the boy’s mother. Nobuyuki heads inside without washing his hands and chows down on his breakfast. After the meal, it’s off to school and work.
Later, while driving his route, Grandpa picks up Amazoness, clad in a kimono like some traditional woman. She tells him she knows who he is, the Phantom No. 107. This is quite odd since 001 was that poor circus freak back in episode 2 or something. I guess the police switched to a new numbering system or something. Anyway, she is looking for the Star of Egypt and she’s pretty sure it was he who stole it. She takes out a knife knocks him out with it. He wakes up tied up by his arms in the Iron Cross Lair.
Professor Monster is playing with a crab and laughs maniacally as usual. He plans on making a Machine Bem out of it. On the monitor, Amazoness savagely whips Mr. Nakayama in a frenzy, demanding the location of the crystal. Monster laughs like a nutjob and talks to his crab. I guess he’s moved on from blood and started on drugs.
Amazoness gives her spiel to Nakayama about how her organization has located him when the police can’t, and now that he’s in their grasp, he will surrender the stone or else they’ll kill him and his grandson. She gives him an ultimatum of one hour. Meanwhile, Takuya greets his number one fan and they go out for a ride by the river banks. Back at the base, Nakayama frees himself and smashes a chair into a Ninder. He tries to escape but is quickly pursued by Amazoness and her men.
Exiting the base, he finds himself by the sea. A crab monster suddenly appears and attacks the old man, spraying its “dangerous foam” at him. It then shoots its gun and causes Nakayama to fall down the side of the cliff. Amazoness arrives and tries to interrogate the old man one last time. Defiant to the end, he dies with the knowledge that his grandson will be well taken care of, even if he lives all by himself.
Amazoness in her kimono, storms the Nakayama house looking for the diamond, with her thugs ransacking every inch of the place. Spider-Man arrives and beats up everybody, forcing the vile woman to retreat coming back another hour. Later that evening, Nobuyuki tells Spider-Man about the Star of Egypt but doesn’t know about how grandpa may be related to it. It all happened five years ago, around the same time the boy was picked up from the orphanage.
Takuya decides to watch over the boy from a spot in the hills, giving him a huge vantage point. Unfortunately, it means Shinko has to pack supplies for the slacker, as he told her it’s all for a special training exercise. As she packs up, both Takuya and the Iron Cross Army start wondering about the Star of Egypt. Neither party is even close to finding its location.
Professor Monster decides to do the wacky thing of sending a robot duplicate of the grandfather to find the diamond. He does it by placing the human shell in a container and then fusing it with the dead body of Nakayama. Yes, that’s actually what happened, especially with no access to cloning tools.
Nobuyuki decides to go look for his grandfather after receiving a message from the copy and heads to the Aramine Coast. Before he goes there by taxi, he tells his dog to go looking for Spider-Man and sends him out into the world. Lucky for the mutt, he does catch up to the hero and they go for a ride to find Nobuyuki.
After a little wandering on the dangerous rocks, Not-ayama is there waiting for the boy. They embrace and the old robot man tells Nobuyuki he’s sorry for worrying him and quickly gets to talking about the treasure. Nobuyuki remembers something that happened on his last birthday, he received an amulet with a map on it. Amazoness quickly takes it and laughs like a lunatic. The robot quickly dies, especially since its role is finished.
The friend of youths quickly saves the boy with a well-timed Spider-Net and begins to fight the Iron Cross Army. After a rather short battle, takes the amulet bag back only to destroy it by throwing it at the Crab Demon. It gets destroyed in the Marveller/Leopardon battle.
In the end, nobody ever did find the Star of Egypt. Nobuyuki cries with anguish that they killed his grandpa for “no good reason.” Spider-Man lies to the boy and tells him that Nakayama was a great grand father, working hard everyday to ensure that his grandchild would grow to become an valued member of society. Well, it is better than just straight up telling him that he was a no good thief that didn’t need to take the diamond in the first place.
