Spider-Man episode 4- “The Deadly Mer-Man! The Silver Thread of Miracles”
This has to be quite an intense episode as the Iron Cross Army is preparing to get rid of Spider-Man once and for all! Anyway, at their secret headquarters, Professor Monster and Amazoness tell a Ninder scientist to develop an assassination plan for Spider-Man, rather than hiring a hitman or something. So the Ninders use a complicated computer that spits out Scantrons and papers while analyzing stock footage of the wall-climber. Professor Monster stares at the ceiling and laughs that this will somehow end Spider-Man! Mwah ha ha ha! Isn’t it cheaper to hire a yakuza thug or a Sicilian zip boy?
The next day, Takuya has nightmares of being beaten by a fish-man and then running for his life as Spider-Man. As the narrator told us two episodes ago, this dream is probably from one of his powers of future-telling. The young man wakes up in a sweat, just as his little brother Takuji tells him that coffee and breakfast is ready. As he reads the paper, an odd obituary is printed.
The obit reads that Spider-Man was killed on 4 June and a funeral will be held for him at Saint Paul’s church on the seventh. Today is the fifth, meaning Takuya has only two days to prevent his death!
He goes with his girlfriend to the church and a reverend tells them that a beautiful woman came crying about the death of Spider-Man. The pastor didn’t really understand what was going on and made the arrangements anyway. Could that woman be… Amazoness? It may as well be, since Iron Cross is too cheap to hire new blood. Hitomi tells Takuya that nobody at the newspaper knew who posted that obit. Takuya rides away, abandoning his girlfriend again! He’s blowing off some steam doing his motorcross stunts of all things.
That night, a couple gets attacked by a cyborg thing from the lagoon. The next day, the information is quickly relayed to Weekly Woman, where Amazoness in her Editor-in-Chief guise tells Hitomi to investigate the half-man/half-fish attack at the Tama River. She then does that creepy hammy stare.
Hitomi goes by the Yamashiro household for her boyfriend, but Takuya has the same plans as well, staking out the harbor long before she arrives. Hitomi later arrives, and the Merman attacks some other couple. No matter how hard she tries to take a photo, her fear gets the better of her and she faints. Spider-Man springs into action upon hearing her screaming.
Using his night vision, Spidey finds Hitomi and leaves her for the police. Using his Spider-Bracelet he chases after the monster into a building. It’s a trap! Professor Monster and Amazoness have been waiting for him and trapped our hero in a cage. He takes out a “book of fate,” which details how he will destroy the web-slinger once and for all. Spider-Man will have to fight the Machine Bem Mer-Man in a death match.
A bell rings, and the emissary from hell begins his fight. He leaps around while the Merman delivers some punches and kicks to him. Spidey is fast, but with so little space, he can’t fight that well. And so, the nightmare comes to life, as Spider-Man gets cut in the chest by one of Mer-Man’s blades. He needs to escape and uses those same blade to create an escape route. He jumps out of the building and it’s the morning.
He eventually reaches home and his family clearly see what is going on with Takuya. He’s seriously wounded, but as the doctor comes for a checkup, he’s already standing hands over his head! That Spider-blood must give him an accelerated healing power as well.
Professor Monster still believes in his plan, holding on to his book like a nutjob. The nightmare continues as Spider-Man falls down a waterfall. Takuya wakes up and is told that it’s the seventh, his death day. He can choose to stay at home and avoid his fate.. but after hearing Hitomi scream again with his Spider-sense, he has to fight them anyway. Despite being told it’s time for breakfast, he goes after the monster anyway.
Hitomi is currently being held by the Iron Cross and is told to summon Spider-Man by none other than her boss. Well it’s Amazoness, but the girl can’t really recognize her Editor-in-Chief?! She presses Hitomi to summon him as he always appears whenever she’s in danger. Spidey does reach the base and sneaks his way in by taking out the guards. He saves Hitomi and tells her to take the Spider-Car GP7.
And we are now treated to another long fight scene of him kicking some Iron Cross butt. Mer-Man enters the fraay and tries to chokes Spider-Man to death, drowning him in the riverbed. The rope-slinger swings up and chokes the monster, and the fight continues. They soon reach the part where they reach the waterfall. Spider-Man is forced down it and with all his strength still struggles to hold to the rock. He screams to Garia to help him and the eponymous silver thread of miracles is suddenly thrown to him. He’s survived yet again!
All that’s left is to kill the Mer-Man with Leopardon. The robot finally has a mano a mano battle, and despite the Mer-Man blowing so much gas, he is quickly killed with the stock Arc Turn and Sword Vigor. It’s a battle to behold, especially it lasted much longer than usual. And as always, the episode ends and Spider-Man must keep fighting for revenge and for Justice!
